Spring Festival Visit to Grassroots

This year, the museum celebrated the Spring Festival for the first time

This year’s Spring Festival is of special significance to Anyang Yinxu – it is the first Spring Festival after the successful application of the Spring Festival for World Heritage, and it is also the first Spring Festival after the new building of Anyang Yinxu Museum in Henan was completed and opened.

At the entrance of the museum on the banks of the Huan River, the red “Si Si Ruyi Anyang Year” theme display board is particularly eye-catching. Tourists line up in long queues, waiting to “talk” with the civilization of three thousand years ago.

This craze has been foreshadowed. After the new museum opened in February 2024, the Yinxu Museum received more than 1.52 million visitors throughout the year. The museum’s cafe launched oracle bone coffee at the right time. The waiter joked with the reporter: “When there are many tourists, I am too busy every day. My arms are almost like bronze tools.”

“The New Year atmosphere here is nourished by civilization!” Mr. Li, who came all the way from Tianjin, exclaimed, “We take our children to the museum almost every holiday. We took advantage of our grandson’s winter vacation to bring him here, not only to feel the New Year atmosphere, but also to learn about history and Chinese civilization.”

During the Spring Festival, the Yinxu Museum took the oracle bone character “snake” as a highlight and planned special exhibitions such as “Searching for ‘it’ in the Crowd – Shang Dynasty Snake Culture Exhibition” and “Gathering the Splendor – 2025 Yisi New Year Wei Feng Oracle Bone Calligraphy and Painting Art Exhibition”, allowing visitors to understand the special meaning of “snake” in traditional Chinese culture through exhibitions and calligraphy art.

“From New Year’s Eve to the seventh day of the Lunar New Year, the average number of visitors to the Yinxu Museum is 12,000 per day, many of whom are families traveling together,” Li Wenjing, director of the Yinxu Museum office, told reporters.

In order to enhance the public’s participation experience, Yinxu Museum planned a special social education activity called “Auspicious Anyang Year”. Among them, the “There is a “It” in Dayi Shangli” study course and the “Snake Competition” were very popular among children. Through games, children can learn about the oracle bone script “snake”, experience the charm of the characters and understand the cultural connotation of the Spring Festival.

“I learned about my hometown by visiting museums, and the more I visit, the more proud I feel!” Ms. Zhai, a local tourist from Anyang, came to visit with her family. She told reporters that the Yinxu Museum was the first museum she took her children to visit during this winter vacation, and she plans to continue her museum tours locally afterwards.

From oracle bone inscription games to “Shang Dynasty New Year’s Eve dinner” to bronze pattern handmade experience, these rich New Year activities not only narrowed the distance between the museum and the public, but also increased tourists’ interest in and understanding of the Shang Dynasty culture. As one tourist said, “In the past, it was easy to take children to visit the museum in a hurry, but today the children took the initiative to ask ‘How did people in the Shang Dynasty celebrate the New Year’ and ‘How to write my name in oracle bone inscriptions’.” This transformation from “seeing” to “asking” and then to “doing” is the most vivid embodiment of cultural inheritance.

“Oracle bone inscriptions and bronze ware are one of the important and most distinctive elements of the Shang Dynasty civilization. Combining them with the Spring Festival customs can not only innovate cultural heritage, but also integrate museum resources into people’s daily lives, allowing people to better understand museums, fall in love with museums and traditional culture.” said Zhao Qingrong, executive deputy director of Yinxu Museum.

The word “snake” engraved on the oracle bones is winding and circling, and the bronze ware tells the story of the Shang Dynasty 3,000 years ago. In the night of Yinxu, red lanterns reflect the ancient rammed earth walls, and the heartbeat of civilization 3,000 years ago is resonating with the new beat of this era.
